Abdelrahman ElGendy, an Egyptian writer and former political prisoner, is a Dietrich fellow at the University of Pittsburgh’s nonfiction writing graduate program. “Does the world even remember us, brother?” The question came tucked in one of the letters our mothers smuggled to us in our separate prisons. I’d met Ayman, the author of the letter, one evening in October 2013 in a prison cell in the Egyptian desert. Listening to the excellent ESPN Radio coverage of the NFL Draft was a further reminder of what is missing from the TV coverage as compared to the past. Led by Chris Carlin, ESPN Radio’s crew actually questioned things, while the TV coverage — whether it was on ESPN, NFL Network or ABC — was far too sweet. Everyone is going to the Hall of Fame! Ingredients2 large heads green cabbage (about 2 lb each)3 lbs. ground chuck1/2 teaspoon salt3/4 teaspoons pepperGarlic powder to taste1 large onion diced3 eggs well beaten1/2 cup catsup3 dinner rolls or 4 slices challah slightly stale and crumbled2 cups diced onions (for bottom of pan)2 bottles chili sauce12 ozjar of grape jellyDirectionsRemove 2 or 3 inches of core from each cabbage and parboil cabbages until leaves are easily peeled.Mix next 8 ingredients together and place approximately 1/4 cup onto each cabbage leaf and roll up.
