Succession Season 3 Episode 5: Roys brace for fireworks atannual shareholders' meeting

The fourth episode of HBO’s smash-hit Succession, titled Retired Janitors of Idaho, aired Sunday on HBO with a key episode in which Waystar Royco’s annual shareholders’ meeting was held.

In the opening scene, Logan Roy (Brian Cox) was seen headed to the annual shareholders’ meeting while Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) spoke with his kids over the phone.

Kendall watched a news report about the upcoming meeting while taking a call from exec Frank Vernon (Peter Friedman) looking to get on the same page amid the changing circumstances ahead of the meeting.

Logan is seen heading into the meeting while taking possession of a bottle of his medication from an assistant ahead of the meeting.

The company execs converge and reveal to Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin), Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) and husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) that Stewy Hosseini (Arian Moayed), Sandy Furness (Larry Pine) and Sandi Furness (Hope Davis) have not been amenable to any settlements amid negotiations.

Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) arrives to the meeting hoping to speak with Logan and demands to speak with him, lest he spill the dirt on the family.

Logan arrives and is debriefed by execs about the uncertainty of the forthcoming vote, with Logan suggesting to continue to put pressure on the U.S. president to ease on the federal probe of the company.

The meeting comes at a pivotal time for the company amid a federal investigation over the company’s history of cover-ups of murders, sexual assaults and other crimes within its cruise division under the stewardship of founder and CEO Logan Roy (Brian Cox).

Amid the tumult, Roy business rivals Stewy Hosseini (Arian Moayed), Sandy Furness (Larry Pine) and Sandi Furness (Hope Davis) have continued their push to win over shareholders and take a majority stake to wrestle the Roy family out of power.

Last week’s episode forwarded the ongoing storyline, introducing Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody into the cast as investor-activist Josh Aaronson (Adrien Brody), who took Logan and Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) on an extended walk through his private island as they discussed where his loyalties lie with the upcoming meeting on tap.

After Logan fell ill on the walk, Josh and Stewy were seen hugging at the end of the episode, setting up uncertainty ahead of the shareholders’ meeting.

The season has also seen the marriage of Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) and husband Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) tested by her ascension up the company ranks, and his fears he will be incarcerated for his actions in the company’s cover-ups, which she has shown little empathy toward.

Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Gerri (J. Smith-Cameron) have continued their business alliance and psychosexual relationship amid the changing circumstances of the company’s power hierarchy.

Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) has looked to parlay his silence (in knowledge of the company’s longtime toxic culture) into aid from his father Logan to boost his presidential hopes.

And Greg (Nicholas Braun) has continued to be a wild card amid the family and business fracas, as it has not been made clear where his loyalties lie.

The Canadian cousin of the Roys, who assisted Tom with the aforementioned cover-ups, has been aggressively courted by Logan and Kendall, while his grandfather Ewan Roy (James Cromwell) has set him up with lawyer Roger Pugh (Peter Riegert), amid speculation the latter two have ulterior political motives in using Greg to expose critical fissures in both Waystar Royco and capitalism at large.

Brody and Davis are among the notable names who have joined the cast for the show’s third season, as Alexander Skarsgard is also slated to appear in the show’s third season as a tech CEO named Lukas Matsson.

The Emmy-winning show from creator Jesse Armstrong has continued to be a hit with critics and fans, dominating the pop culture press and social media with its ensemble cast and scintillating storylines.

Succession continues with the fifth episode in the nine-episode season, titled What It Takes, on Sunday, November 21 at 9 PM ET on HBO.
